Where in the World?

Spring Term 2023

During the Autumn Term 2022, the children engaged with the theme ‘Footprints’ and had the opportunity to explore their identities and how these change over time - in the past, in the present and looking into the future. The children identified associated changes within their own lives, their homes and local community of Aberdare. Our theme ‘Where in the World?’ seeks to extend this and provide the children with opportunities to explore and investigate other countries, cultures and beliefs and begin to compare and contrast these with their own. Using the hook of ‘Handa’s Surprise’, we will seek to explore the strand of Cultural Identity through patterns (and colour) in music, art and dance. We will seek to immerse the children into the Multicultural world that they are growing up in. This is particularly important, since our school and local community demographic perhaps lacks a diverse range of cultures and heritage.

Through the theme ‘Where in the World?’ we aim to develop learners as Ethical, Informed Citizens by encouraging them to explore and investigate world cultures and heritage and begin to make connections with their own Cynefin. Learners will begin to recognise and understand how different cultures come together and live harmoniously together. We aim to develop our learners as Healthy, Confident Individuals through ensuring they understand their values, ethics and beliefs and are ready to play an active part in wider society. We aim to develop Ambitious, Capable learners by inspiring a love of learning and by providing them with the skills and knowledge they need in order to apply them in different contexts. Similarly, we aim to develop Enterprising, Creative Contributors by providing opportunities to contribute to our local communities and the wider world.

Our BIG question this term is:

'What helps us identify where we are in the world?'
